Is there some example source code that shows how to read and write image files?

I've started to create some small example programs. They contain source code and step-by-step explanations on what the code does. I tried to keep everything simple, so hopefully beginners can understand what's going on: Java source code examples for handling image files.

• Load an image and display it in a window
• Load an image, scale it to thumbnail size and save it to a JPEG file
• Takes a screenshot of the desktop and save it as PNG
• Load an image, highlight part of it, add text to its bottom, and save it
